Tallulah Morton opens the Jaime Lee show

On Thursday evening the 12th September, Western Australian designer Jaime Lee Major premiered her new collection Light Magic at the Perth Fashion Festival to rave reviews. The collection features 22 insanely embellished hand beaded looks combining Swarovski crystal detailing, french lace, original digital prints and silk tulle. Held inside the city museum, top model Tallulah Morton (who features in our next issue) opened the show on a catwalk made of perspex mirror garnished with a floral garden set built by Rebecca Grace from Natural Art Flowers. The opening dress featured 200 metres of silk cut flowers and some of the dresses have nearly 700 hours work of individual beading. The inspiration behind the collection was based on the way in which light plays within the stained glass windows of the medieval cathedrals of Europe. The following is a brief backstage diary of the girls transforming for the show - with regular Black collaborator M.A.C. directing beauty headed by the calm and collected Carol Mackie and hair constructed by Brad Ngata for the L'Oreal Creative team. NZ Fashion Weekend: AOK show photo essay by Ishna Jacobs

NZ Fashion Weekend provided an opportunity for designers to show what's-in-store-now to the public and fans of the brands in a relaxed atmosphere. A quartet of designers who all have stores or workrooms on Auckland's Karangahape Road; Hailwood, Maaike, Lela Jacobs and Jimmy D joined forces on Saturday afternoon at the Viaduct Events centre in a sweet coming together of clearly symbiotic style to create the A.O.K show. Lela Jacob's sister Ishna Jacobs was on hand to shoot these sometimes intimate, sometimes poignant but always beautiful images in a behind-the-scenes photo essay for Blacklog. As far as a behind-the-scenes portrait of a fashion show goes, we think this is more than A.O.K!

NZFW 2013 - Stolen Girlfriends Club "Dirty Magic"

Situated in the sprawling basement of the Red Bull building Stolen Girlfriends Club once again showed just why the label has grown so popular with their Dirty Magic collection. The biggest crowd of NZFW 2013 surged around the criss-cross catwalk supping on Steinlagers and cocktails in the now legendary jam jars whilst waiting for the show to begin in quiet anticipation. Dirty Magic could be tagged 'grunge', 'boho' or 'punk' but to these eyes at least there was a healthy dose of rock'n'roll hippy as well, 'Got a Black Magic Woman' sprung to mind. Heavy velvet, paisley, and plaid chiffon added a tone of incense to the air but the soundtrack of The Dead Weather, The Kills, The Horrors and The Datsuns - who played at the after party - was decidedly more rock'n'roll/punk in keeping with the tartan and leather themes in the collection. Stylist and long time cohort of the label Zara Mirken added footwear and accessories to suit and several very cool pieces created by colab partner Fernando Perra straddled the themes within the collection perfectly. Oh, and there were hats, great hats! M,A.C supremo James Molloy and his crew created a stunning rainbow eye to the brief; "Pagan Punk in Inky Tones" and Greg Murrell and the team and Ryder excelled with several outstanding mohawks and vibrant, pretty brushed look across the girls. Of special mention was the sweet set design by Paris Kirby and Dominic Oldrey that did much to transform the concrete bunker status of the room into something more akin to 'Dirty Magic". NZFW 2013 - Zambesi - BTS photo essay by Sam Lee

We were gutted to have missed this epic show by Zambesi, by all accounts one of their best ever. What a great concept to roll back the walls at the start of the show to provide a clear cut view into the machinations of the backstage show environment of the great New Zealand label. That the collection was wall-to-wall with elegant, gorgeous pieces adorning a brilliant cast of models only added to the occasion. Liz Findlay said in Black several issues ago that if she wasn't a designer, she would have been a stylist and alongside the uber talented Dayne Johnson this was a superbly styled show. Amazing make-up as usual by the Amber D-led M.A.C Cosmetics team and equally fabulous hair by the Jason Chong-Li-led Stephen Marr team. Sam Lee was there for Blacklog to capture BTS images.

NZFW 2013 - Hailwood - BTS H&M photo essay by Sam Lee

Adrian Hailwood is now a fashion week stalwart, his show always one of the most anticipated and always one of the most enjoyed. This year was no different and featured the talents of M.A.C Director of Make-up Artistry Asia, Mr James Molloy. James is a legendary make-up artist that can turn his hand to any style and for Hailwood he created beautiful lips in burgundy and fuschia that reflected a brief to suit the collection; "40's film starlets and 70's screen sirens." James' work will soon grace one of our BLK #20 covers with Ruby Jean Wilson shot by Thom Kerr. Hair for Hailwood by Danny Pato using Joico was suitably glam and to the brief. NZFW 2013 - Company of Strangers - BTS photo essay by Sam Lee

We were unable to attend three of the shows we really wanted to on Fashion Week's Big Tuesday due to the malaise of late Winter flu and all of its attendant complications but luckily Sam Lee was still on hand to capture images. Here is a selection of BTS action from Company of Strangers' great collection in the 'Underground' environment of the Sofitel Hotel's basement car park - such a welcome addition to Fashion Week in general. New Zealand Fashion Week 2013 - Lela Jacobs

This might have been Lela Jacobs first showing at New Zealand Fashion Week but her show was put together like she had been there every year for a decade; suitably brooding ambient soundscapes courtesy of live act Tzar Behemoth, a great cast of models that bordered on eccentric, an element of choreography (yes, the sometimes dreaded choreography in fashion) which was pulled off with aplomb by the models, "glance off into the crowd about half way down then glance off at the people watching you on the other side again as you come back," a little circle at the end in front of the photographers, very strong hair and make-up concepts - these are things that many designers attempt only when they have built up years of confidence, bravo Lela. The collection, intriguingly entitled 'De' - a prefix - was as minimal yet complex at its name suggested with strong elements of construction, texture, layering and detail. The colour palette was unashamedly swathed with black, creamy white and shades of grey and accessories included spikey crowns, a must-have long hair 'necklace' that, in a styling sense, went oh-so-perfectly with the model's own hair and a variety of fine metal pieces by local designer John Troy O'Sullivan aka Abnumeral. In a visual sense the message was clear "de-centralize" and even that was printed in a font that seemed entirely suitable for Lela Jacobs. Also loved the painted finger concept. Make-up by the Caitlin Lomas-led M.A.C team. Hair by the Sky Cripps-Jackson-led Stephen Marr team.  All-in-all an assured and cohesive debut at NZFW for the talented Wellingtonian cum Aucklander. It's no secret here at Blacklog that we lean towards things a little darker in taste. Photographer Daniel Sangermani discovered this abandoned burnt out house and couldn't resist creating a fashion story inside the lonely destination. Featuring Grace and Sapphire from Dallys with fashion by Kymberly Louise, the two girls explore the space and these pictures are the final results. The Marr Factory 2013 - Thursday - Kate Sylvester

The final day of The Marr Factory saw Kate Sylvester revisit one of the most iconic, nay, immortal fashion shots of all time, the William Travilla dress which Marilyn Munroe famously wore over the wind-blown grate in the 1955 film, The Seven Year Itch. Kate Sylvester's Wayne Conway spent some time building a podium with built-in fan to ensure the many beautiful dresses of Kate's latest collection were given plenty of air and added a spotlight to give the podium moment a filmic treatment. The result was a perfect finish to a great week of shows. The styling by Karen Inderbitzen-Waller was, as always, gorgeous, hair by Lauren Gunn and the Stephen Marr team was suitably flowing and beautiful and Amber D and the M.A.C team created a strong eye befitting a Marilyn moment from 1955. After a long week, all of the show models delivered their own version of that moment when Marilyn said, "Ooh, do you feel the breeze from the subway?" Priceless. The Marr Factory 2013 - Wednesday - Workshop & Helen Cherry

Day four of The Marr Factory saw Workshop and Helen Cherry draw upon artistic relationships, creative partnerships and a quality selection of imports for a rocking and rolling evening at The Golden Dawn. And draw they did; motifs from Auckland artist Paul Hartigan adorned not only the concrete walls of the bar thanks to chalk translators Enu and Tuhi but also several Workshop pieces, and most notably, the bodies of models Danika at N Model Management and Thom O and Charlie at Red 11. These Hartigan  "Tattoo Classiques" were drawn by the experienced crew at Two Hands nearby and more artistic in-show flourishes from artists Max Gimbett and Martin Popplewell epitomised the spirit of collaboration in the air. Styled by Black Fashion Director Rachael Churchward, the show featured a raft of in-store pieces by Workshop Denim and Helen Cherry plus some sweet international flavour from the likes of: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Isabel Marant, See by Chloe and Vanessa Bruno. Amber D and the M.A.C team excelled again, creating a stunning lip of What a Blast pencil, Morange lipstick and Red Electric pigment and Matt Benns and the Stephen Marr crew styled up a straight-with-edge hair look using Original & Mineral - the H&M combo working a treat. And then there was the music; Workshop Musical Director Dylan Cherry has for some time been delivering quality show music to our ears and last night's soundtrack was next level; a killer mix of the old and new, mashed-up, mixed and progressively becoming more relentless, loved it. All in all a great show with plenty of Courvoisier, Mills Reef bubbly, Hallertau and yummy x regular GD food and service to ensure the party went well into the night. The Marr Factory 2013 - Tuesday - NOM*d

Day three of The Marr Factory saw NOM*d's Malcolm McLaren and Madame Butterfly inspired 'Fans' collection grace the runway at The Golden Dawn. The inspiration of the great opera's main Japanese protagonist, Ciocio-san, was omnipresent across the beautiful styling by Karen Inderbitzen-Waller, and fabulous hair by Lauren Gunn and the Stephen Marr team using Original & Mineral and once again, brilliant make-up by Amber D and the M.A.C team. Supplementing the show was a dual video screen set-up which showed a film by Richard Shaw assisted by Delphine Planqueel which took NOM*d's legendary relationship with deconstruction to a new level. The wall-to-wall crowd amped no doubt by the Courvoisier cocktails and Hallertau beer which flowed freely as is befitting The Marr Factory events. The Marr Factory 2013 - Monday - Zambesi

It's not often that we get to flip the script as it were and do our own thing on the catwalk, but at last night's Zambesi show at the Golden Dawn that is exactly what happened. We joined a cavalcade of singers, actresses, music producers, TV reporters, designers, cakers, tattoo artists, baristas, make-up queens, model bookers, bloggers, stylists, photographers and a dude called Bruno, all affectionately known as Zambassadors, to do what we have been telling models to do for so long, walk down a catwalk and rep the designer to the hilt. Luckily there was a great selection of iconic and fresh local models led by the ever beautiful Penny Pickard and Ngahuia Williams to show us the way. Liz, Dayne and the Zambesi crew managed to very accurately style each person in outfits that succinctly befitted each person. Make-up applied by Amber D and her M.A.C team and hair by the Lauren Gunn-led Stephen Marr using Original & Mineral ensured all and sundry were looking their best. With a soundtrack of INXS tunes, delicious Courvoisier cocktails, flowing Hallertau on tap and yummy food by the awesome team at Golden Dawn, Zambesi put perhaps the most fun we have seen in fashion since, er, 1979! The Marr Factory 2013: Sunday - Karen Walker

The rain stayed away for the opening night of The Marr Factory, ensuring that Karen Walker's 'New Rose' was not dampened, in spirit or body. If anything, spirits were running high as New Zealand's superstar model du jour Ashleigh Good set off down the runway at The Golden Dawn flanked by an adoring crowd of customers, media and fashionistas. No less than 38 models wound their way through the crowd resplendent in outfits from the New Rose collection, ubiquitous Karen Walker Eyewear, Karen Walker Jewellery and of course, the super colab of Karen Walker x Beau Coops to pound the pavement, as it were. Great make-up by the Amber D-led M.A.C Cosmetics team and hair by Sky Cripps-Jackson and the Stephen Marr team, and of course fab Courvoisier cocktails and the odd Hallertau number 2 added much to the party atmosphere. After the show models made their way up to the labyrinth of rooms above The Golden Dawn to be snapped by Oliver Rose, Black photographer Sam Lee and numerous others. Strateas Carlucci lands in New Zealand, at Wunderkammer

Black readers will aware of our admiration for Melbourne-based label Strateas Carlucci. Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci had success early in their fashion and design careers with a brand and retail operation called Trimapee before shifting their focus toward a more tailored and substantial brand that not only drew upon their inherent European lineage but also targeted Europe as a market directly from day one. Thus Strateas Carlucci was born in early 2012. The boys went straight to Paris Fashion Week and launched the label in the fashion capital and have followed up with a number of return trips since - a strategy that has resulted in substantial European awareness and a raft of outlets across the continent. More recently they entered the International Woolmark Awards, made the finals and were pipped at the post by Christopher Esber but the design, quality and construction of their work was as usual, par excellence. With a solid line of trade now established in Europe the boys have recently been turning their attention to developing an Australasian audience and we are excited to announce that a selection of Strateas Carlucci is in store now at Wunderkammer, 76a Ponsonby Road, their first New Zealand outlet. If you are a fan of the Belgian and/or Japanese designer ethos, but are also looking for something different, designed and crafted a little closer to home - at a more agreeable price point - you will love Strateas Carlucci. Blacklog Editorial #54: Becca Gilmartin and Nelson Lai shoot beauty with Amanda Griffiths at Chic

Freshly inspired from her Vogue Italia Talents shoot, Australian makeup artist and blacklog contributor Becca Gilmartin has collaborated with photographer Nelson Lai to shoot these incredibly surreal beauty portraits with Amanda Griffiths from Chic. Painstakingly put together by hand over several hours with silver and gold leafing over black paint, the final illusion is one of near perfect symmetry. We asked Becca to reflect on these pieces of art. "Rorschach ink blot test is used to analyse interpretations and the observers meaning. I was inspired by the Rorschach tests in my curiosity with people's own interpretation of beauty; their own and others beauty. Beauty is an ever changing template which evolves with age, culture and taste. I see people chase an imaginary template on a daily basis and I am so curious by this... So much low self esteem is created within the gap between a person as they actually are and this imaginary template. This shoot was born from that thought and inspired by a recent research task into the world of Alexander McQueen." Perhaps a future glimpse into a makeup look inspired for their next season's runways...

Marloes Horst has long been a Black favourite, ever since her role in Paul Empson's Parisien ode to Helmut Newton in Issue 11. Perfect then for this film to celebrate Stella McCartney Lingerie's SS 13 collection which features floral prints alongside flocked patterns, classic styles and sexy sheer laces. As always, there are many stories to the collection, 17 in fact, all named after 'girls in cheeky situations.' Among the names for the season? 'Clara Whispering', 'Marguerite Riding', 'Giselle Charming', 'Camille cooling' and 'Rachel Shopping.' Perhaps she could add, 'Stella Enchanting.'

Inspired by Bert Stern's "Last Sitting" images of the most iconic of all icons Marilyn Monroe, the beautiful Kate Sylvester SS 13/14 campaign shot and styled by Karen Inderbitzen-Waller features girl du jour Holly Rose Emery at Red 11 looking somewhere between smouldering, insouciant and melancholic, a moment befitting the candle that burned out long before the legend ever did. New Face: David K Shields shoots Monique at N Model Management

No rest for the wicked (Dave). Immediately upon his return from Paris and London at the weekend, David K Shields was out to the West Coast to shoot beautiful new face at N Model Management, Monique. There's something intriguing, classical and slightly mysterious about Monique which has us enthralled. Monique wears a selection of beautiful dresses by Rue De Seine. Infamous Duo shoot Bianca at N Model Management x Stolen Girlfriends Club 'Nasty Goreng"

The Infamous Duo took Bianca Henry at N Model Management to the wild west coast to shoot her in outfits from Stolen Girlfriends Club's SS 13/14 Nasty Goreng collection. Using the styling by Black Fashion Director Rachael Churchward from the recent show the pair teamed with hair and make-up artist Leisa Welch to capture beautiful Bianca in epic landscapes. They also shot the accompanying film below. Love it!

Black favourite Vinnie Woolston at 62 Models gains a few long locks and partners up with Seon at Clyne for the Zambesi S/S 13/14 campaign shot by Marissa Findlay in a mix of vibrant colour and sharp black and white. This collection's Zambesi Woman finds herself in fluid forms and disciplined shapes from slim-fit skirts to voluminous kimonos. The Zambesi Man will find himself in slim-fit jackets, patched-knee trousers, oversized board shorts or even a vintage motorcycle suit, all within a considered approach to minimalism and function. Whilst in town they made a pit stop with Dally's model Joel Meacock who has recently returned from walking Calvin Klein during his last mens show season. Joel will be sharing some of his adventures in an interview shortly in a separate post... but until then, enjoy this Blacklog exclusive including fashion from Burberry, Prada, Wil Valor and Pistols at Dawn. What a sweet combo. Thing Thing collaborated with Raglan crew Fallen Front and the ever superb Vinnie Woolston at 62 Models to create this wicked 'Floating" campaign for the brand. Shot in Raglan, a home or spiritual home for all concerned by Louie Buckley the images are quite simply as Raglan as you can get and invigoratingly conceptual. As Fallen Front say on their initial post of these images: "Thing Thing is all about sleek design, simple colours, crisp fabrics and tricky shapes, giving these gears a unique aesthetic." Love this to pieces, for every reason...

Petra Collins shoots the new Glassons campaign - BTS film by Rylan Perry

That Glassons have secured the services of Petra Collins to shoot their latest campaign - on the world-famous-although-perhaps-for-tenuous-reasons Jersey Shore - is a creative coup of some standing. As a photographer the 19-year-old Canadian has quickly established herself as having the perfect eye and wherewithal to capture the essence of youth in an honest, intelligent and compassionate style. Global teen fashion sensation Tavi Gevinson surely recognised this when appointing Petra as staff photographer for her magazine, Rookie. Legendary art photographer Richard Kern also recognised her talent by appointing her as his casting director. Our favourite secret squirrels Infamous Duo take to moving image and master the art of double exposure with aplomb in this languid and pretty film to celebrate some of the prettiest dresses from Stolen Girlfriends Club's 'Nasty Goreng' collection, in store now. The Duo took twins Kelsey and Baylee from Auckland model agency Clyne to a beachy environ and cut the film to the suitably ethereal sounds of Mazzy Star. Hair & make-up by Ava Williams...sweet as!

Strateas Carlucci Woolmark Award collection by Superteam

Our talented Melbourne friends Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci aka Strateas Carlucci continue to amaze us with their unerring quality - in concept, design, tailoring and finishing - and last week they went some way toward amazing the judges, and many others at the prestigious Woolmark Awards held in Sydney, with this superb mini collection/submission. The award was won by Christopher Esber but the standard of work was very high from all the contestants, including another Melbourne favourite Lui Hon. For the 50th Blacklog editorial, photographer Lula Cucchiara teams with art director Ash Mosen and stylist Rose Morgan at Vixen to shoot one of our favourite new faces at Red 11, Helena Mitchell, in a clear-cut homage to Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie. Cucchiara once again mixes digital with instant stock from The Impossible Project and chooses two locations with a touch of 70's glam in Hotel De Brett and the Academy Cinema to frame her subject. I Love Ugly July Collection Campaign by Shadowlands

If there is one thing we love about I Love Ugly, it is the complete nature of their vision and delivery for each and every collection. The I Love Ugly man is very much a lifestyle interpretation - he has a sweet living space, he appreciates art and design, his world is filled with things which meld perfectly with the brand's clothing and accessories and above all, he is inspired by life - "Aspire to Inspire before you Expire" says the brand. Like many of their design contemporaries I Love Ugly don't adhere to the S/S/F/W format, instead they release regular collections that offer much to their local and international fans - one follower's summer is another's winter. For the second installment of their mid-year release the brand once again do what they do so well - great prints and tailoring. The Argentinian native, now firmly ensconced in Three Kings, Auckland is a talented film maker and photographer with a very special eye for both the real, and the unreal. Here she teams once again with partner Ash Mosen to shoot fresh face at Red 11 Nick Reid with his partner Jules Van der Voorn in Vixen and Zora Bell Boyd Jewellery. Pretty much a case of a talented and creative couple shooting another talented and creative couple! We love the vision here, and the execution, across three formats; video, instant film (The Impossible Project) and digital.

Global Citizen Project - Auckland Town Hall, Sunday August 4

Poverty is one of those words that unsettles politicians the world over. A sense of NIMBYism often ensues, a shame-about-what-is-happening-there approach married with a thank-God-we-got-our-shit-sussed-here disclaimer. Yet, clearly, poverty is a global issue and something that we are not immune to here in New Zealand - large tracts of our suburban and rural population could attest to that. Great to see then, that The Global Poverty Project, an international education and advocacy organisation, striving to end the extreme global poverty that affects more than 1.2 billion people is alive and well in Aotearoa. Teaming with other venerable organisations such as World Vision, VSA, Childfund, Oxfam, Unicef, TEAR Fund and the P3 Foundation the Global Poverty Project have been using that most unifying of things, music, to bring the issue to the forefront of the young and conscious alike by staging concerts around the world. One such concert in New York recently was a massive success and it is with an element of pride that we advise of a New Zealand version. The Global Citizen Concert will take place at the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday, August 4. A raft of high quality kiwi acts are repping the cause; Tiki Taane, Anika Moa, Jamie McDell, Seth Haapu, Ahoiribuzz and Maitreya to name a few. That sounds like a sweetly combined sound for a cause - that given the problem affects one sixth of the world's population - might just be one of the biggest 'causes' around. In suitably empathetic terms, tickets can either be 'earned' or purchased at Globalcitizen.org so do your bit, get along and support the supporters...

Bat Country - Happy Home video

Filmed entirely by audience members at a recent live gig at Auckland's Whammy Bar, here is the brand new video from one of our kiwi music favourites, Bat Country.

Songstress Nina McSweeney and steel-guitar master Brendan Turner make up the raucous duet that deliver a self confessed "creep-folk" sound that is Bat Country. With such a contagious energy on stage backed by dirty, bluesy guitar riffs, harmonica and crashing tambourine, you must see these guys live to get a real feel for their vibe. Good thing then that Director Marcus Palmer decided to record their live antics in order to promote the band's sound, energy and soul.
