Nick Von K's black pearl snake head pieces

Photo: Daniel Max

Auckland jeweller Nick Von K has created something special with these black pearl, 18 carat white gold snakehead pieces. The bespoke, one-offs feature very rare, perfectly round black pearls sourced from a friend of photographer Daniel Max. "Willy" is the son of a Tahitian pearl farmer and had the pearls in his possession for many years before allowing Nick to use them for these unique, gorgeous pieces. For the larger piece, Nick came up with the idea of the snake swallowing the pearl, Willy loved it and Von K took the pearl to Bali where his best carver spent three days carving the snake head to fit perfectly whilst Von K sat with him to discuss the design. Von K has a valuation certificate valuing the piece at NZ $11,000. Anyone genuinely interested in the pieces can contact Nick directly: nick@nickvonk.com

Beau Is The Go!

All photos by Greg Novak

Along with No Magazine editor Delany Tabron and Megan from FQ, we spent a late afternoon at the House of Last showroom in Chippendale, Sydney in between shows at last week's RAFW. Utterly fabulous New Zealand-born shoe designer Carrie Cooper and her able director of marketing, fellow Kiwi Carla Robinson, entertained us and showed us through the new range of Beau Coops, Carrie's signature label. To say that Beau Coops is progressing is an understatement. Her new collection, featuring a raft of fab styles for both men and women is all class, style and concept - and quite simply, we want them all! Faithful Black photographer Greg Novak lensed these shots of just a few shoes from the new range - now available in New Zealand, Australia and many other parts of the world.

RAFW Hair: Magdalena Velevska by Richard Kavanagh

Whilst we were largely attending M.A.C shows at RAFW this year, our photographer Greg Novak covered a couple of shows that featured Kiwi hair legend Richard Kavanagh working his magic. Here is a selection of images from the Magdalena Velevska show that validate just how far Richard has come in recent years working on the global team for Redken, learning from the greats like Guido. Make-up by Nica Marcello for Bobbi Brown. We asked Richard to describe his look for this show:

"The hair @ Magdalena Velevska was inspired by the essence of folky and ethnic craftwork. The idea was to try and reflect the macrame motif in the fabric as well as the highly controlled execution of the cut and drape of the fabric. Redken Rootful and Forceful were the key products to create control and shine and the hair was rope braided in a geometric pattern similar to macrame. To make it modern a strong V- shaped parting in the front gave the girls a futuristic look. "

RAFW Beauty: Stolen Girlfriends Club backstage by Greg Novak

On Thursday night, Kiwi label Stolen Girlfriends Club showed at a packed Cargo Theatre on site at RAFW. The show featured a series of fab prints by Auckland artist Karl Maughan but more on that and the range itself in a wrap-up-of-the-week post later this week. Here, we are focusing on the make-up by Terry Barber for M.A/C Cosmetics and the hair by Greg Murrell @ Ryder for KMS California. Photos of the two maestros and crew at work below. RAFW Beauty: Kate Sylvester backstage by Greg Novak

We asked photographer Greg Novak to pick up some doco shots backstage at the gorgeous Kate Sylvester show on Tuesday night, not just Australian models like Julia Nobis or Krystal Glynn but also Terry Barber (above), M.A.C's director of artistry for the UK, and the M.A.C and Redken crews at work. Terry has been in overdrive this week doing interview after interview, shooting for local mags, holding M.A.C master classes and showing his magic as key artist for both the Kate Sylvester show and Stolen Girlfriends Club tonight.

RAFW Beauty: Kate Sylvester by Terry Barber

We have so thoroughly enjoyed meeting M.A.C make-up legend Terry Barber this week that we are going to kidnap him and put him in our luggage at the end of the week to take him to New Zealand. Last night Kate Sylvester showed a stunningly beautiful collection at the Inglis horse sales coral in Randwick. Here are a couple of images by Greg Novak of Terry's sublime look for the show. Hair by John Pulitano.

RAFW Beauty: Flannel by Nicole Thompson

All photos by Greg Novak
The sun is shining today in Sydney after a couple of grey days. RAFW has been loads of fun already and we've seen some great shows, met some swell people and hung out with our Kiwi friends and plenty of Aussies too. Here is the first of a series of posts that concentrate on the make-up expertise of our hosts, M.A.C Cosmetics and the beauty/hair side in general. West Australian label Flannel showed La Sacura, a luxe range steeped in Japanese influence on Monday. All photos by Greg Novak. Key M.A.C make-up artist for this show was Nicole Thompson whose amazing work will also feature in the upcoming issue of Black. Hair by Redken with lead stylist John Pulitano @ Headcase Hair.

Tristan Blair Brogues at The Men's Department

Photo: Daniel Max

Aussie shoe genius Tristan Blair has always had a penchant for all things military. For his AW 2011 collection entitled "Vivid Arms" Blair researched the styles, colours and cuts used in military footwear and in particular, the variations of leather used to heel young recruits. The collection makes a hero out of beautiful natural hides in rich, dark burgundy and mocha tones and the good news for Kiwi brogue fans is the shoes are now available at The Men's Department on Auckland's North Shore. So, march on in and score yourself a pair.

Desert - The Real Story Behind Kiwi-Asian Marriages

Young Kiwi-Korean director Stephen Kang is set to release his second feature film Desert at the Rialto on May 5. Based on real life events, Desert follows the story of Jenny, a pregnant young Asian girl living in Auckland who is left to fend for herself when she is abandoned at the altar by her Kiwi boyfriend. Not only is she abandoned by the cad but she is also rejected by her own community for getting pregnant to a Westerner, out of wedlock. She goes in search of the miscreant partner but in the end is forced to look inside herself to find a solution for her and her unborn baby. Shot in the late night fluorescent world of Auckland laundromats and familiar landmarks, and subtitled in English, the film marks not only a huge step up for the fledgling director but also a sentient moment in Asian-New Zealand equivalence. Desert, a Severe/Curious Film production, starring Jane Kim, Andrew Han and Marek Sumich, directed by Stephen Kang at The Rialto from May 5.

Karen Walker Jewellery at Harrods!

Is there a more prestigious retail destination in the world than Harrods? Probably not, so congratulations must go out to Karen Walker Jewellery. The legendary Knightsbridge, London luxury shopping institution has purchased a significant amount of Karen's 'Superfine' collection, including the top-selling heart and star pendants and earrings. The jewellery will be on sale in store but will also feature in the Harrods magazine which goes out to over 70,000 super top end customers, literally the creme de la creme of fashion customers. Bam!

Salasai film "A Strange Love Project" by Claire Littler & Ralph Matthews

Salasai's film last night was called A Strange Love Project and was less about Dr Strangelove and more about strange suburban neurosis. Directed by Claire Littler and Ralph Matthews the film was also styled by Dan Ahwa, hair was by Lauren Gunn @ Stephen Marr, make-up by Katie Rogers. The film stars one of New Zealand's great models, Penny Pickard, and the magnificently illustrated Sam Crocker. The tune is West by Menomena.

Nick Von K film "Beautiful Alchemy" by Matt Wilson

Last night each designer chose to show their new season ranges by way of a short film. At the beginning of the year we suggested this could be the year of the fashion film and both of these films add weight to that theory. First up, here is Nick Von K's film, directed by Matt Wilson, shot by Maxy, styled by Dan Ahwa. Invasion of the Bodysnatchers style art department by Nick Klarwill, produced by Emily Moon and body art/make-up by Monika Olson. The models are Hunter McLeod @ Clyne and Gabriella Kuhns @ Red 11.

Salasai + NIck Von K Project: Party Pics

Last night at the Hopetoun Alpha Salasai launched their SS 2011 range and Nick Von K his new season jewellery with an event that featured a film of each range, a performance by the velvet-voiced Julia Deans replete with dancers and a stunning exhibition of portraits by Russ Flatt. The event raised money for the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake appeal but also raised the bar for portraiture with Flatt showing just how skilled and creative he is in the medium. Thanks to sponsors Osmosis, Vidal wines, Peroni, 420 water, Hopetoun Alpha and Kingsize Studios. Before the night kicked off we snapped some pictures of the fashionable crowd...

A trip around our online world

New York, USA

The proliferation of mega cities around the planet is perhaps the most visible manifestation of the march of civilised mankind. Equally visible to us here at Black Magazine is the proliferation of
fans' we are experiencing on our Facebook page. Today, we crossed the 30,000 mark and outside our home fanbase in New Zealand now have 12 cities that are home to over 500 Black Magazine Facebook fans, some have several thousand. Other cities of note include; Melbourne, Brisbane, Santiago, Quezon City, New Delhi, Madrid, Milan, Mexico City, Berlin, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. We are, of course, deeply excited about this and welcome all new and existing fans to Black Magazine and our online sites. Whilst we hope to travel to some of these cities over the next year or so, some of our key contributors already live in them, and their contributions since the first issue continue to be essential to the Black ethos. In the meantime, here is a selection of images of these great (500 plus) cities, a trip around our online world. To our new online friends....

Nau mai, haere mai...(welcome).

Black #14: Derek Kettela to shoot Ashley Smith

Image: Ronald Dick for Lurve Magazine
This Tuesday, one of our New York teams comprising photographer Derek Kettela, fashion editor Michelle Cameron and hair and make-up artist Valery Gherman are heading upstate New York to the legendary town of Woodstock to shoot Ashley Smith. Smith, who has appeared in both Rushh and our own 1AM in recent times is one of the world's favourite gap toothed models and recently appeared on the cover of Beauty Inc with the mother of gap, Lauren Hutton. Our suggestion to the crew? Do NOT take the brown acid...

A long hot summer just passed us by...

Muriwai Beach, 2-to-3 foot and glassy from our deck

...while Mother Earth ravaged places close to us and dear to our hearts: Christchurch, Queensland and of course, Japan, have had to endure unfathomable difficulties recently. Here at Muriwai, on Auckland's West Coast, La Nina has delivered a pristine summer of gorgeous days, good surf and much loved family and friends. It has been surreal to watch, read and assimilate the images and information that has accompanied the devastation whilst we were experiencing a classic New Zealand summer, in Auckland. It has also been humbling. Every New Zealander has been affected by the earthquake in Christchurch and deeply moved to try and help. We have all been inspired by the strength of the people of Canterbury and their response and resilience. A great New Zealand trait.

Support, and more exactly, money is going to be required for some time yet to get the new Christchurch up and running. On Tuesday 5th of April Black Magazine is presenting an event featuring the combined talents of Salasai and Nick Von K Jewellery, a component of which will raise funds for the Christchurch Earthquake Red Cross fund. It will be a night of films, performance and an exhibition of photographs by Russ Flatt that will be silent-auctioned on the night, with the proceeds going to Christchurch. It is invite only but we will cover it here on Blacklog and our Facebook page. Here is a Muriwai sunset at the end of the golden summer...we feel very grateful...

Black #14: Adam Custins shoots portraits

Gregor McGregor, his wife Pura and their son George, 1910
Photo: Frank. J. Denton, Whanganui
We are shooting portraits this issue with photographer Adam Custins, based upon the legacy of Rachael's great-great grandmother Te Pura McGregor and Rachael's ancestry, or whakapapa. We have realised the story in a modern-retro style with Maori, European and Chinese models.  Rachael is also Samoan, German, Irish and Scottish in her bloodline so this shoot is all about representing the multi-cultural bloodlines that abound in Aotearoa. Adam has been shooting on large format Polaroid film and to date the models have been; Yasmine @ Clyne, Danielle @ 62, Eve @ August, Seon @ Clyne, and Henry and Grace.

Te Pura Manihera was a chieftainess of Ngā Poutama at Matahiwi pa, forty miles north of Whanganui and the daughter of  Te Manihera who married Scotsman Gregor McGregor. She was the first Maori woman to receive an O.B.E (Order of the British Empire) and often led the haka for her tribe, sometimes in battle, in the late 19th Century. Later that night she would be comfortable integrating with the new settlers in a stylish Victorian ensemble and was capable of eloquent conversation. In one of numerous historical passages about Te Pura she is described as follows; "Pura was always beautifully dressed and never lost her grace and charm. She always walked slowly. At the same time she retained her skill in leading the haka, especially when it was one of welcome, and immediately afterwards, with all the dignity of true Maori aristocracy, she could adorn any (European) drawing-room, knowing instinctively what to do." Below is a photo of Te Pura (centre, with mere) and group at Tesla Studios, Whanganui, circa 1900...look out for the modern interpretation featuring Kiri and Jason Nathan, Ann Demeulemeester, Comme Des Garcons, Therese Rawsthorne, Wunderkammer Jewellery and more....Te Manihera, Te Pura, Maata, Te Huiakama, Hori, Rachael...arohanui..x

BLACKLOG EDITORIAL #10: Kiri Nathan AW 2011 by David K. Shields

Above and below: Lili, upstairs at Alberton House

This editorial featuring Kiri Nathan's AW 2011 range 'Hiamo' was shot by David K. Shields at Alberton House in Mt Albert on the day of Kiri's launch and show in the grand old building. It was a great night and Nathan used the building itself and its entire grounds to welcome us with a piece by the Atimira Dance Company prior to a show on the steps and walkways in front of the house. Inspired by dancer Jack Gray's Te Rarawa whakapapa from Mitimiti on the west coast of the Far North, it was a haunting and beautiful piece that set the tone for Kiri's creations perfectly, and those of her partner Jason Nathan, who created the beautiful pounamu pieces worn by the models. Hair by Matthew Benns @ Stephen Marr. Make-up by Phoenix Cosmetics. Models for both the show and shoot: Lili SumnerCheryl Waterbridge and Sharni Ripohau @ Red 11, Yasmine Bidois and Seon @ Clyne, Nicola Harris @ Nova and Genevieve Mora @ Vanity Walk. All clothing by Kiri Nathan, shoes by Kathryn Wilson.

The Department Store rolls up its sleeves for Christchurch

Image: Michigirl.com
This Sunday, in a collectively philanthropic effort, the founders of The Department Store are putting everything they have into raising funds for the people of Christchurch who have been so adversely affected by the Feb 22 earthquake. Karen Walker, Dan Gosling (BlackBox and Stolen Girlfriends Club), Stephen and Lucy Marr and Simon James will not only be donating every cent that crosses the counter to the Red Cross appeal but will also be spending the day there themselves to interact with supportive customers. Karen will be on hand to help style customers in store (has there been a better opportunity to have Karen as a personal stylist for a moment?), Stephen and Lucy (two of this country's best) will be cutting hair on the salon floor, Dan Gosling will be there with his team to help you pull together the slickest outfit you can and Simon James and staff will also be on hand, giving advice on design objects, books and interiors.

Add celebrities flipping sausages on the grill, top line DJs and the fabulous environment of The Department Store itself and you have a one-off, inclusive shopping experience that may never happen again. Be advised though, that Stephen Marr customers especially are urged to book early so call them on 09 488 0585 to do so...

Black #14: David Shields, Rachael Churchward and Adam Bryce shoot neo-grunge

Lili & David
Kia ora koutou, we are right in the middle of our shooting schedule for Black #14, our 5th birthday issue, hence the low volume of posts lately. Yesterday, we crossed the Auckland Harbour Bridge to shoot amongst the sandy cliff faces and reedy wetlands of the inner Waitemata Harbour. David Shields lensed the shoot, fashion editors Rachael Churchward and Adam Bryce revisited the best of early grunge (circa 1988 - 1992) with a modern twist, Greg Murrell fashioned some suitable hair and Natalie Dent applied the make-up using M.A.C Cosmetics. Assistant fashion editor was the redoubtable Jessica Grubisa. Extra hair and flash shoes by Tom @ Ryder. Models were: Lili Sumner and Cory van Malland @ Red 11, Elena and David Lawson @ 62 Models. Without giving too much away here are some over-the-shoulder snaps of the day...

BLACKLOG EDITORIAL #9: March Beauty by Greg Novak

Seon @ Clyne
As mentioned in a previous post we are loving the new M.A.C trends for the season. So much so that we asked photographer Greg Novak and make-up artist Natalie Dent to shoot a wee beauty editorial inspired by the trends. Natalie says, " I guess what I was going for was a innocent, young, fresh and feminine look for each girl. So I used colours from the new range mixed with other M.A.C products I have. Each model either had their lip colour taken back with foundation and lip conditioner over the top with a hint of pigment. I used muted soft brown eyeshadows to softly contour and shape the eyes.  I used a mixture of pigments and pearly eyeshadows on the eyes and lips to appear fresh and only a little mascara to keep them looking less made up." Models are: Rhianon @ August,  Seon and Yasmine @ Clyne, Kitty @ Red 11 and Anna @ 62 Models.

Ben Webb Exhibition

Ben Webb is one of the most enigmatic and interesting New Zealand artists. His first exhibition in 1996 represented the youngest ever showing of a NZ artist in a public gallery and not long after he went on to become the youngest NZ artist to represent NZ overseas. Ben has spent half the year in Berlin for over ten years, lived and shown in Buenos Aries and had European-based residencies and fellowships. For a boy from Dunedin, that's an international schedule. Over the years Ben has crossed over as much, if not more, than any New Zealand artist with the fashion industry. His collaborations include; Blanchet, Nom D, Carlson and Wunderkammer among others and his current exhibition features Elza and Nellie Jenkins (above and below) the twins made famous after their sojourn on NZ's Next Top Model. It is unlikely though, that fans of that show will be familiar with Ben's work. We think he is a genius, an artist who thinks outside the square and isn't afraid to cross the line. Here is a selection of his work, some of which is on display at Wunderkammer this week...

Single Source - The South Island's Perfect Pilsner

Five days on from the devastating quake in Canterbury it is still hard to think about much else. To any of our Blacklog readers in the region, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you. It is perhaps serendipitous that earlier in the week we were sent a box of beer by Monteiths brewery. Single Source is a bottom fermented batch brewed pilsner derived from Charmay barley grown at Bill Davey's Rakaia farm (above) just south of Tuesday's quake epicentre - hopefully any damage to Bill's farm was minimal. This is a classy beer with a sharp, dry finish, superb packaging and a genuine story to match. The hops are sourced further north at Ian Thorn's Motueka hops garden and brewed by the legendary Tony Mercer. Everything about this beer is world class, so we have had a few this week whilst thinking of the people trying to overcome such devastation in the world class region of Canterbury...

Eating Sundaes on the Underground

Firstly, our thoughts and wishes go out to any Blacklog readers in the Christchurch area affected by the devastating quake. Kia kaha! Christchurch is a great city, it will rebuild...

This post is about a new jewellery label from a bit further down the line in Dunedin. Underground Sundae was founded by artist Anne-Mieke Ytsma in 2010. Ytsma comes form a fine art background but has been making jewellery since graduating from art school in 2006. More recently she has collaborated with Sara Aspinall's Company of Strangers label on a jewellery line but is launching Underground Sundae to realise the crossover between her art jewellery and the fashion based concepts she forged for COS.

Underground Sundae is available from Black Box and Children of Vision.
